Ok, on Satuarday I went to Emma’s BBQ and i told my idea to Emma’s sister who is marketing manager of an optical company. Anyway, she liked the idea taht you could talk to the iphone about your appointment. But she didnt really find a use of the hologram, she said it would be good if she was doing some paperwork and her hologram reminded her that she had a meeting but she couldnt make it because she was overflooded with paperwork and her hologram would appear in another person phone at the meeting instead of her and the hologram would be acting in her place.

Even though this idea seems insanly impossible, I think its logical. She did have a point when she said she couldn’t find a use for the hologram, and having this hologram replace you in a meeting seems to a even more advance idea that the speaking organiser.

Before I conducted my interview I was really worried about her opnion about the idea because she used a PDA phone. PDA phones do ALOT more than just recording down appointments, it does email, Xcel, powerpoint etc. My idea only was limited to the organiser, so I thought she wouldn’t like it since it seemed so useless to her. But I thought wrong. If the idea actaully took place of all the finctions of a PDA phone, then there it would be getting to tecnical. However, just sticking to the one function, it seems more logical and pratical.

So the idea is that the hologram records and reads back your meetingg etc. You can send over your hologram to another iphone and this is sort of like a video calling, except its a hologram video calling AND you can send an hologram SMS. Do you think there are too many functions? I reckon i should only stick to two buecase three is just too much…

I think I better blog..at least once…

I’ve done a little research, and I’ve asked many more people about my idea. Its getting abit fustrating when i ask about their opnion though, I say when I’m asking that I don’t want them to think about the possibilty of the idea, just look at the idea..and then they tell me that it would a be technology problem..*screams*

But many people like my idea because its “there”. Obviously..the people I have asked would not go out buy this application..unless you were really desperate. But they liked the idea, since it is an idea which is advancing from another one…so its already an idea…but advancing from it? Does that make any sense?

Many people recommended that I use the program iholo ( as mentioned in my previous blogs) because it would be really fun to be able to “make up” your own hologram. Since I’m sticking with the idea that the user will be able to send a birhtday hologram to a bithday person, they should be able to make up the hologram they are going to send off in the program. I think alot of people like the idea that you can send a hologram to another person as well as having this hologram be your organiser…

 SO! The idea i have so far..its the program is called iholo…( so creative..isn’t it?)

In the program..you can

-tell the hologram ur appointment

-there will be a shortcut to the program on the main screen

-design your hologram

-desingn a hologram with accessories and it off as an SMS

sometimes i really wish i was ian thorpe, then i would have a 50m pool sitting outside my house just waiting for me to enter. I’ve got the worse headahce which is making me think not right. I still have 6 pages to for the DECO1008 assignment, a website to complete, and a maya tutorial to begin.

Uni..such a stressful place, my pimples are coming out non stop…..ARGHHHHH

i need a swim, but i can’t go to a pool at this hour…so..i’ll hop in the shower

haha..why didnt i think of that earlier? maybe after my warm shower i’ll be able to type another 3 pages of the assingment and then HEHEHEE..i can sleeeeeppppp :D:D:D:D:D

I don’t think i’ll post all the itnerviews i did, but i’ll just reply on the interviews ive done so far. I wanted to interview people which were out of the design faculty, and coming from a different i’m limited to friends, so, i decieded to interview dancing people.

i interview a 24 year old dance teacher who does pysch at uni. He does have the use of the diary and he told me that the my idea is cool, a great thing to carry around to look good but its not very practical. I guess he does have a point. He would find it easier to open a diay and write down his events or appointments. I guess my user group for people who do use a diary is not right. but we’ll see when i interview a woman who is the state manager and needs a diary with her at all times.

the other person i interviewed was 19, living byhimself and he does Arts at uni. He liked the idea also, when i told him about suna’s idea of putting the ide of the hologram acting as an organiser and a sms, he liked the idea even more. He said the concept would be more pracitcal if the hologram would do abit more than just tell you your appoitments. Example if it was someones birthday, the hologram would ask you if you wanted to send a sms or whatever.

i think my user group is focusing more towards people who are female are at the age of maybe 20-25 and who have a busy timetable. I think rob was right about how men don’t really seem to ” build” a relationship with objects, they just use it, they don’t see it as something different.

I was really looking forward to doing the interviews, because I was going to interview one person in particular, and that person..haha..DIDN’T SHOW UP!!! :( but i managed to interview another person..

Age: 14

Occupation: year 9 student, sometimes but very rarley uses a diary to record appointments

1. How do you record appointments, meetings and special events?

answer: when I have an assignment due I would ask other people when something is due, when I have an dentist appointment I would use a calender.

Do you use your mobile phone to help you with birthday/appointments?

Answer: No, its too much trouble to go nto the application and type it in, it only leaves a certain amount of text foryou to type in. However I use the alarm clock function as my alarm clock.

3. Why have you never considered using a diary?

Answer: Mainly due to laziness and it takes alot of effort to open the diary and write things down. Another reason is taht even if you write things down in the diary, you often forget to check it and this loses the point of using a diary

4. Do you think using a diary lowers down your self esteem as a male?

Answer: no, it won’t. I think this because I do not not use a diary beucase I think it make me look weak, its simply because I’m lazy 

5. what possibilities would u consider to start using a diary?

Answer: If I was busier and if the diary allowed me to instead write the  appointment, allowed me to speak to it and read it back out when i asked it to.

From this interview, I got the idea that my user group maybe people who do not use a diary at all, but would like to start using one. The user group would have to slightly older age that 14 because at this age, your not that busy. I could only interview one person so far because it is difficult finding people who are willing to contibute. It is also very hard to find people who were willing to take this interview seriosuly but, nevertheless I want to thank Jacky for doing this interview with me, I really appreciate it!

Anyway, i have many ideas, and to make up for all the days i havent blogged this week, this will be an extra long entry, so have fun reading.

ok

first idea, was the hologram acts as a personal assistant, so it would alert you when you had an SMS, appointment, voicemail, email, weather updates, news updates, etc. The usergroup was hard to think of because so many people would find this useful. But i managed to narrow it down to people who were extremely busy and could not afford a secretary or a personal assistant.

second idea, was that the hologram acts as a virtual friend for lonley or very stressed out people ( thats mainly everyone in sydney). this friend ( this applies to all ideas) would have a personality and voice which the user programmed it to have when the user first purchased it.  However, the problem with this idea was that people who are lonley or stressed out may not want to talk to a machine, so i kind of threw that idea out of the window.

third idea, given to kristina and the idea i like the most is that the hologram acts as a SMS/ecard. Instead of sending someone and SMS or an ecard on a special accasion ( ie, brithday, christmas etc) you send a hologram. Ok so its kristina’s birthday, and i want to send her hologram person which pops out of her screen and is holding a present and says ” happy birthday kristina” how to make this hologram. well the iphone would have a program called iholo ( so original..i know) this prgram you select your personalised hologram ( the one you program when you first get your iphone) and then you select either the default accessories such as a birhtday cake or a present or you can download the different accessories online or you could program the the accessories yourself. so why would this application be used for the iphone? An iphone is something the user would carry around with them all the time. So if someone wantd you to open the hologram SMS straight away, you would be able to. With an ecard, you would have to have access to a laptop or a computer which was connected to the internet.

fourth idea, the hologram acts as a diary. The main user group would be people who have the habbit of using a diary or an organiser. Or for people who would like to start using a diary but they just cannot be bothered to insert the the appointments in all the time. So how does this work? Everytime the user gets an appointment or s special date to remember, instead of writing it down in a diary it would tell the hologram and the hologram would be able to “write it down” and place it in “its diary” . So when the date comes, a day or two days before the actaul date the hologram would alert the user by popping out and tell them they have to do this at this time. This is very similar to personal assistant idea but it wont alert you when you get SMS or voicemail. In addition, the hologram can also be a “things to do ” list, you tell them what you need to do the coming days the night before you go to bed. Then in the morning it will remind you that things need to be done.

ok they are the ideas so far. I like number three and four the best because i am able to find a user group for them

OK..here we go

the user group for my iphone application.

I’ve changed my idea so that the phone acts as something that you want to talk to when you want. So my initial idea that it pops out whenever you get a SMS or email is in the trash. The new idea is that it will tell you that you have a new sms, but it won’t pop out of the screen. It will remain in the screen and then you press this button and it will appear before your eyes. Further more, the new idea has changed that when you feel like a talk, you can ask him to come out and have a little chat with you.

The usr group I think would fit into with people who have an extremely stressful, busy and full on lifestyle. For example, people who constantly at the office working overtime, students who are stressing over assingments or exams and CEO or executives of a company. So these interface would act as a virtual friend. Sort of like a pet, but it can talk to you.

The only different with this new idea and the older idea is that the new idea will allow you to control when you want this person to have contact with you. So it wont be like clippy from word which is always in the way and asking you lame questions. 

So I’ll give you an scenario:

Jason is working at his office and he has twenty more papers to sign. He has a flight to London the next morning at 8am and he still has to go to and pack his luggage. He is getting very stressed because it is currently 10pm and he has not evn started with reading the papers he needs to sign. Without his signature, the company can not put forward the process and hence would lose millions. So he needs a break, but he doesn’t feel like a sleep or eating something. He wants something which would keep him entertained but on task. So he takes out his iphone, turns the projetor on and he starts having a conversation with it. Because Jason programmed his character to be a certain personality, it will not act to be annoying and give Jason more stress.  So while he is reading and doing his work. Jason will sometimes take a break and have a quick chat with the hologram. This hologram can tell jokes, funny stories and simply things which will keep Jason calm and peaceful.

I wanted my application to be something which was useful in ways to do things faster and more convinient, but I also wanted it to have a certain impact on the user itself.  Life is becoming stressful, and it will be even more stressful in the coming years. I want the iphone application to be something other than real humans which users can turn to. The user group I have chosen for this application don’t always have loved ones around them, so sometimes a virtual friend will help.

It’s been forever since i last left a blog here. BUT! I’m still alive.

Rob’s lecture was about interface agents, AND my iphone idea is about making that new interface. But mines not simple, it will be hard.

I though at about the downfalls of my idea:

-if John (the hologram) keeps popping up, keeps downloading emails, it will use alot of battery and memory.

-will John be helpful? He will alert you everytime there is a new email, however, he wont jump out of the screen suddenly. He will most likely give you a sign for example a vibration alert. I’m scared that after time, John will be annoying instead of helpful. I don’t want this interface to end up like clippy from microsoft word (everyone hates it!)

because of the hologram idea, the iphone will have a lid ( like plastic cover) which will do both things:

1. provide the reflection when the projector is shining through so that you will see a 3D character

2. protect the touch screen so it won’t get scrathces when it is your pockets or hand bags with sharp objects.

So because it has this lid, do you think that the look of the phone is going backwards and becoming less stylish because have a see though lid kind of looks-dodgy, but pratical.

I think the current iphone is really good, VERY good idea because its something so new. But really, its nothing that exciting. It’s not a very practical thing.

There is a different i think (especially now) with buying something becase you want it, or buying it because it looks so cool. There are SO many things on the market which look so high tech and would make you look so pro, but they aren’t really that useful. Even mobile phones today, all you really do is SMS and call people. Even with video calling, not many use it because its simply too expensive.

well, I must continue with my deco1005 assignment, just like everyone else. I think that why everyone has disappeared from the non stop blogging phase!

HELLLLOOOOO!!!!

How is everyone?? How was your weekend? I hope it was good. I mean three days of Florence not updating her blog ( it was a challenge, I must admit!)

Anyway, I’m really happy!!! Well, I saw a dance performance, it was amazing, especially the popping part, oh my, back to the main point of this blog!

Ok, I think I will stick to the idea of my hologram. But it will be more a projector light rebounding a wall ( I’ll think of where the wall will be later) and the reflection from the wall gives you a three dimensional view of your personalised person. This person, you can program to your suited personality ( I think we all know what my person will be like).

You may all be asking, what is the point in having this person besides having alerts for voicemail, emal, SMS etc.

I can say, I have a very good justification. If you are living alone ( ie. me) you kind of feel lonley most of the time, so this person can keep you entertained, talk to you, play games with you. On top of that, this personcan interact well with other. For example, if I wanted to talk to Suna, but Suna was busy, the person on my Iphone ( let’s call that, John) would pop out of Suna’s screen and ask if she wanted to talk to me, and then Suna’s would say yes or no and then John would report back to me.
